Basti : (Medicinal enimetas)

Basti : the urinary bladder of cow, buffalow, sheep was used as pressure pump in olden days to administer the medicinal matter into colon through rectum by adjusting a wooden or Metal nosel to it. Hence the process is named as Basti.

It is of mainly two types :

Niruha or asthapana basti:

which contains more quantity of kwatha – decoction.
Sneha basti- or Anuvasana basti – which contains more quantity of oil.

The first one is given for usually shodhana and second one is for snehana.

Uttar Basti :

Medicine which is administered in urinary bladder and in uterus in women is called Uttar Basti.

 

Niruha Basti:-

Niruha Basti with combination of specific medicines also acts as a

Lekhana – reducing
Brihmana – Tissue promoting
Shamana – Sedative for Dosha
Stambana – Antidiarrhoeal
Vrishya – Benificial to shukra etc.

To whome Niruha should be given ?

  • Ekanga and Sarvanga roga of vata
  • Constipation
  • Obstruction in urination
  • Loss of strength in body and discoloration
  • Loss of mansa and shukra
  • Tympanitis
  • Loss of sensation (Supti)
  • Worms
  • Stiffness in body
  • Diseases of spleen
  • Fever
  • Fistula
  • Stiffness in back and hips
  • Tremors
  • Epilepsy and fits
  • Joints Diseases
  • All vata vyadhies – like Sandhivata, Pakshaghata (Hemiplegia) Gridrasi, Ardita, Kampavata, Hanugraha, Manya graha etc.
  • Pain due to calculus
  • Eye Problems
  • Gout
  • Problems of lactation
  • All Gynaec disease e.g. Kashtartava (painful menses, utaine fibroid, Polycystic ovaries, infertility etc.)

To Whom Anuvasan should be given

Who is suitable for Niruha usually suitable for Anuvasana
Dryness of body
Very strong gastric fire
All vata diseases.
For oleation and Nutrition
All gynaec disorders like – Kashtartava (painful menses, utaine fibroid, Polycystic ovaries, infertility etc. )

How to give Basti :

For niruha – simple enema cane can be used.
For sneha Basti – glycerine syringe can be used.

If Basti contain prakshapa drugs – pressure pump type Basti is used. Basti Netra prepared of metal attached to volleyball bladder or plastic bags can be used.

First prepare Basti yantra according to standard method. Fill the medicine in Bladder or plastic bag. Apply little oil on rectum and insert 14 no. rubber catheter, about 6” to 8” inside rectum slowly when patient is lying down on left lateral position – taking peculiar basti shayana vidhi as indicated below. Slowly press the rubber bag or bladder to introduce internal medicine in the colon with equal pressure. Do not enter whole fluid inside remain little in ide the bag so as to avoid entrance of air in the end. Raise the hip region so that fluid may not return immediately.

Tell the patient to pass motion when stools are ready to come out with return of basti materials. Patient should not pass motion forcibally or retain forcibally.
Every Niruha Basti is followed by sneha basti or Matra Basti on alternate day. Matra Basti means a Basti given in little quantity of oil ( 50 to 60 ml. of oil).

In chronic cases- Basti can be given for 8 days, 16 days or even for 30 days.
Before Basti, patient is prepared by Abhyanga and Swedana he should lie down on left Latteral position putting left hand below the head, extending left leg straightly and flexing right leg in knee joint and putting on left thigh.

  • Beneficial for memory.

Helps in epilepsy, myopathy, polio, hemiplegia, paraplegia, arthrstis, lumbosecral pain, ulcers, ulcerative colitis, headache, shukra dosha, stree roga and many other roga according to uses of drugs. Also cervical / thorack / Lumbar spondylasis ,all diseases of spines.
it reduces the higher cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
