Nasya : Nasal administration

Medicinal oil, ghee, juices, powder or vapour is administered into nose by special method. Process is called Nasya nose is described a gateway of brain-all the diseases of upper elavicular region are very well treated by Nasya.

Types of Nasya :

Rechana

It is eliminative

Brihmana

It is regenerative, increases body tissue

Shamana

It is sadative

Sandnya prabodhana

It is given in unconscious patient to bring consiousness

Stambhana

It is given to stop oozing and bleeding from nose.

There are other types of Nasya as follows :

Navana

used every day with oil or ghee

Avapeeda

the juice of leaves or fruit is used

Dhmapena

Blowing of powder in nose by tube

Dhooma

medicinal smoke or vapour is used

Marsha and pratimarsha

oil or ghee is used every day. In Marsha quantity is high 10 to 20 drops in pratimarsha quantity is low – 2 to 4 drops.

How to give ?

Do abhyanga by suitable oil on head face,forehead, shoulder and nasal region 10 – 15 minutes.

Hot water fomentation – by rubber bag, or clothes 10 minutes.
Allow patient to lie down on straight bed – keeping pillow below his neck to bring nose in front and face in little lower position.

Or patient can sit in special chair (like dental chair) and neck can be rested on kussion to keep face in lower level and nose up.

Anutaila, shad bindu tails, or juices or an liquid medicine should be warmed and put into dropper. Close left nostril by thumb, and put 4 to 8 drops in left one, Inhale it by inspiration.

Powder nasya – 1 to 2 Ratti can be administered by inspiration inhalation.
Dhmapana – Nasya – or Pradhamana – Nasya is specific in which powder is filled in metal or wooden tube or paper tube and entering one end into nostril vaidya blows into other end by mouth so that powder is entered into nose with force. Specially it is used in unconscious patient. Now rubber bulb attached small plastic and glass tubes are available – they can be used.

Vapour Nasya – Leaves of medicine or kwatha Yavakuta is kept on boiling, Patient is advised to cover with towel or chaddar his head and face and inhale the vapour as per his tolerance, Nilagiri patra vapour nasya is very useful in sinus, and common cold.
Black, Maricha (Black pepper) can be taken on Anpin by pointed end, burn it and smoke should be entered into nostril keeping nodular head in our head.

What to do after Nasya

  • Gargle by hot water
  • Mild fomentation on fore head and face, throat, neck
  • Wash face and head
  • Watch for samyak laxana
  • Complete rest and mounam (no talk)
  • Shodhana nasya is always followed by Ghee Nasya

What are the signs of good nasya ?

  • Lightness in head and body
  • Good sleep
  • Blissfullness of indriya and manas
  • Elimination through nasal strotas
  • Relieves signs and symptoms of disease for which it is given.

The uses of Nasya

  1. It is useful to bring natural sleep (oil or ghee nasya)
  2. Useful in headache and migrane (churna – nasya)
  3. Promotes intellingency and memory
  4. Useful in khalitya and palitya loss of hair and grey hair
  5. Cleanning of brain through nasal srotas
  6. Nutrional action for brain through nasal srotas

Pratimarsha nasya :

2 – 4 drops of oil or ghee can be taken daily. It prevents infection through nose and throat and acts as immunisation against viral and bacterial infection by obstructing them to enter in body.
